Hi DMB! Ok so the results from the first day are out as shown below. Well just for your info,
though it may not mean much to you, here are the adjudicators for SYF:
  • Dr Kelly Tang
  • Mr Amri (don't know who he is)
  • Mr Mitsuo Nonami (Japan; composer of SYF 2008 set piece; adjudicator of past SYFs)
  • Dr William Malambri (don't know who he is)
  • Mr Bert Aaiders (Former president of WASBE)
  • Mr Henk Smith (Netherlands)
  • Dr Erica Neidlinger (Chicago)
There will be sectionals tomorrow at 3:30pm, please do your best to make it on time. From the feedback from some of you, dynamics, articulation and sound blending still needs to be worked on. Work on these tomorrow. Please remember what Mr Yeo tells you by writing it down on your score and apply it. For those who have trouble playing long phrases due to lack of air, here's a tip, it's what I do every night before I sleep: I assume most of you have beds against a wall, so what you do is you take a piece of paper and blow it on the wall for as long as you can. Seriously, it helps. Excercising is another good idea mentioned by Mr Yeo, especially running/jogging. Oh yeah, please keep yourself healthy, take good care of yourself. Sleep early, drink lots of water, eat a balanced diet etc.. Just make sure you're fit and healthy to play for SYF next tuesday. There will be a speech day rehearsal this friday @ 3pm, just for everyone to know. Attendance is compulsory for everyone unless you have valid reasons like MEP, blah blah blah... Yup thats all, cya all tomorrow! :]

Hey Band!

After seeing much posts on ppl's reflection, could see the improvement that the band made :))
BUT Dont be COMPLACENT yet!!
theres still a long way to go.. Even though we got the notes but we were still missing of some things. We often forgot our DYAMICS, INTONATION, and stuffs... Like where to crescendo, how to END the last note of the piece. Long note short note blah blah..

COME ON D.M.B!
We can do it!!!!

Its all IN THE MIND!
Juz a PENCIL to write wat mr yeo says and it'll be a stepping stone to GOLD! :)

Anw, ITs credit time! (:
During sectionals on wed, RZ was super serious! (clap clap)
Felt really happy that our flute section FINALLY got to sectionals as a SECTION. :D
During sections today... Samantha helped Zarifah with the running notes @ N in pecos. And ended up Yu xiu and me joined in to play together.

GOOD WORK SAM! For teaching us (:

Glad that Zarifah practise real hard for running notes in the front part of pecos. :D
[Not bad! But not enough air! (: ] Not to forget SAMANTHA too!!! She also practised hard after knowing that almost everyone in the section could play the running notes (:

JIA YOU! >.<
Hope that EVERYONE'll work SUPER DUPER hard! (: (Rmb yr pencils!)
ELICIA :D

Hey people! Its my turn to post :)
I will just keep this simple and sweet.

Today's band practice made me extremely motivated. Its hard for me to express or explain why, but somehow seeing every band member's determined face, I felt even more determined to be my best. And today, Mr Yeo put up something on the notice board for us. I read it and I felt so touched (seriously). I agree with what Mr Yeo said, SYF is not a competition against other bands or ccas. But its a competition against yourself.

If there's an enemy in this situation, the enemy would be ourselves. Because its your choice, your will, whether you wish to succeed or fail. I believe all of us want to get a gold, and I believe we can. Just looking at all the exchanges we've gone through, all the band practices.. From my point of view, all of us improved.

Its always okay to make mistakes, but whats most important is we LEARN from it. We know what went wrong and we should never repeat the same thing again.

And I honestly think we should all encourage each other. Especially the soloists. Its really not easy to be up on the stage, playing for everybody else to hear. And since we're all in this together, the more we should encourage one another! :) So everybody, lets give a big hug and words of encouragement for Ruizhong, Joeytham, Hongting, Fiona, and all the other soloists.

Last but not least, I want to tell Tengjiao, you really improved alot, and I feel so proud of you :)

- JoeyTan.

@ 19:02
hi
i find that th band prac tday is okay.. it was better after our break, i think its bcause some of us nvr eat our breakfast as some are rushing t go t sch (like me). Anyway, in Pecos, there are a lot of running notes for me nd ever since MsFoo tested th flute section on our running notes, me nd elicia kept on forcing each other t practise on our running notes nd whenever there's sectionals, we did our running notes together.. there's one time, on wed, only me nd elicia came for sectionals nd we did th exercise that MrYeo taught us during th mon sectionals.. it helps me with my air nd all that nd it worked! Now, we can play our running notes better alr..
I hope that th band will work harder within this short period of time left nd I hope that we can get gold or maybe even gold with honours. WORK HARD!

hi,
i'm supposed to post ytd but i was busy. so, sorry.. ytd's practice was okay, apart from the netballers' thingy.. but, we shouldn't blame them. after speaking with a netballer classmate of mine today, i found out that they had no choice but to practice in the concourse. many of us have pointed out ytd that there was no rain so the netballers should do their businesses in their rightful venue(s). but, the fault was not the netballers'. although there was no rain, there was both lightning and thunder and they were thus driven indoors by mr boh. (not that the fault was mr boh's, he was just doing his job..) yes, i do agree that they didn't apologise after their ball came toward us and caused some commotion. but as the "wide-minded" (is there such a word??!) and magnanimous band, can't we just turn a blind eye, forgive and forget??
getting tired of me huh?? kays, i'll just end off with a quote. here goes:
"Even an individual at cross purposes with himself is certain to end in failure. Yet a hundred or even a thousand people can definitely attain their goal, if they are of one mind"

Alright, its my turn to post now (:

I feel today band practice was alright, just that we are all we distracted and tired but nevertheless I believe everyone is trying their best to concentrate and listen to MrYeo. I admit I am very distracted most of the time but I will constantly remind myself to focus.

SYF is about in 11 days time and I agreed with what Jasmine said today, the secondary three
only have this one and only chance to participate in SYF, none of us want to regret before you leave dunearn, so just work hard and harder this few days! and like what MrBeh always says, No pain, No gain (: you got to work hard in order to get something! and additional that, we can prove to the school that band is definitely the CCA that will make them feel proud of, not just for the sake of saying.

Miracles do happen, but it depends on us this time round.
Everyone want to get GOLD right? So jiayou :D

Deying.

@ 21:58
I feel band today was okay, and that we should inspire ourselves to do better and put in our best for band practices and syf.
I just want to say that, always have faith in yourselves.
goodluck people

@ 20:20
HOLD IT UP !
I'm the first sec4 to post and i'm proud of it. Cheh ! (:

Not gonna do any reflections on today's practice cos other posts would be the same.

Anyway, SYF'09 is in about 11 more days. And it's the graduating students last SYF. Oh ! Not to forget that it's the Sec 3Es ONE & ONLY SYF. Few days more. And that's it. All our hardwork, if that's what you call it, will put to an end. The band will then move on to something else. Continue bonding more. This kind of helps in our music. And yeah, stay strong till the 7th of April.

In fact, not only till 7th April. We should always be there for each other. Through thick and thin. Well, if that's asking for too much. Let's just stay together. No point wearing our band tee if it's only for show. Prove it that we're really "One for all. All for one."

I find it stupid to type out what the others had posted before. Yeah we all think the same of way and stuffs. Everyone suggested something out. But why couldn't we do what we've suggested. Once someone is making the first move, why don't the rest co-operate. It's better than going nowhere.

If you do have anything in mind, just speak it out. Don't keep it to yourself or only to those who you are close with. As band-mates, we should work together (:

Anyway, i was surprised by how the trumpeters sound today : D
You guys sound better. Seriously.
Loveyouguys,
Azimah

@ 20:06
Hi there! ;D
It's my turn to post about today's band practise! :)
Well, today's band practise is quite good, absolutely an improvement of the past previous practises. *cheers!*
But there are some people who were distracted by the netballers, and not listening.
i think the majors should ask the netballers nicely to move to somewhere elses to play or they will make us lose our concentration.
Plus i could tell Mr.Yeo was kind of angry when the ball flew towards the band
Well, I agree what Artifah has said. We have to FOCUS.
Even though you focus already, you still must FOCUS MORE.
I presume almost all of you guys has already memorised both Pecos Pueblo and Overture no.1 already,
So if you have already done that(memorising both scores), then look at Mr.Yeo! Because he may do some new performing directions.(Is this the correct term?) Hahaha!
Try to remember what Mr.Yeo has said prior to the improvements of the piece. It may concern you. Put it down BIG in your score. Decorate the words if possible, but don't make it too messy. (hehheh.)
Well, sorry to say, but there is only 11 DAYS TO SYF.
Yeah, and before you know it, it'll be our turn.
And, we're right after Yuying Secondary(And their band is SERIOUSLY GOOD.) and we're right before Victoria School(Another VERY GOOD BAND.)
So, we're sanwiched between 2 good bands.
Feeling the pressure now?
As the saying goes ( I kinda quoted from a anime movie. :P)
"Time waits for no one."
We have already reached it's peak, but it's NOT OVER yet. We still have a long road to go.
We still can improve!!! Just BELIEVE!!!!
Visualise the scene when the announcer tells us that Dunearn Secondary School has Achieved GOLD, or even better, GOLD WITH HONOURS!!! If that happens, I'm sure lots of people will cry with joy! I know I will!!!
Let's make the school PROUD! Let's make ourselves PROUD!
Oh yeah, just to sidetrack a lil' bit, a friend of mine told me that" Band sucks."
And what's worse, he even told me that "the Band is deproving."
I was REALLY ANGRY when he told me that. But just for safety measures, I won't tell you who is it.
Then I told to myself, that i'll prove him wrong.

Well, We're ONE BAND. A team. Let's do our part, as a member to work hard.
A little contribution won't hurt, ain't it? Put in more effort yeah?
LET'S HAVE THE GOLD BAND ATTITUDE! or even better, a Gold with HONOURS attitude!
Bring back your scores everyday. Go through them, sing your parts, and do the fingerings. SING IT OUT LOUD if you want to. Make your family members irritated, or not. (That's what I did to irritate my older sibling. :P)
Like the Majors has already said, Don't be COMPLACENT.
Complacency and Disunity(is there such word?) leads to THE IMMEDIATE DOWNFALL OF THE BAND.
Don't give up. C'mon, it's the LAST LAP ALREADY.
JUST GIVE IT YOUR ALL. YOUR UTMOST BEST SHOT.
The outcome depends on the effort that we have put in.
JIAYOU DMB!! GANBATTE!!!!
Okay, I think I oughta stop now. I think I write too much. (Oops.)
Signing off,
-GraceHo.

@ 19:38
hello!

well. i think band practice today is quite good.,
but we were are not focusing enough.
we get easily distracted by the netballers .
lol.
anyway , we should FOCUS more during band practice
so that we can improve better .!
haha.
and we better practice the parts where Mr Yeo wanted
us to work on.
so that we can get GOLD !
infact GOLD WITH HONOURS !
so yarh , DMB we can DO IT !!!!
yeah!!!

Alrighty, its my turn now :D
So, today's sectionals was a good one. Yeah, can see that all the sections really work on what was written on th paper given to us. Also, other sections actually went to find other sections to play together. Like, LWW and Lower Brass, playing the part before 'A' alot of times just to be on time. Then Trumpets and Trombones and Bassoons playing the part before 'G'. Then when i was on th way t th toilet, I saw Flutes and Oboes still practicing together even though everybody has started packing up. I find that doing sectionals with other sections that holds the same part with you really helps because it could make our bond stronger. So, i think we should do this oftenly because it really helps.

Anyway, SYF is 12 more days. Come on DMB, we can do it :D
Anything can happen. So, lets make a miracle and achieve GOLD! Infact, Gold With Honours!
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee, Jiayou jiayou!

Ok, i must go study fr E-maths and A-maths test now! All the best fr the sec 3's. ( im off topic alrd )

- Sabrinaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :D

@ 20:04
Hello BANDMATES! :D
Today's sectionals was great.
But I guess I played a little fool during sectionals. Just a little. xD
Yup. I saw quite many sections having sectionals seriously. GOOD!
I think the majors did the right choice of photocopying the paper that MrYeo wrote to give us.
I think that all section like 1st Clar, 2nd Clar, 3rd Clar should have like 1 each to share among.
So we could know where to practise and such.
Ya. So thanks (:
Then I want to apologise for my bad attitude last yr/ the yr before.
If I have make you guys real angry, please forgive me. Yup. x)
Continue with the attitude of taking sectionals seriously and I will.
As for today I little bit hyper then I suddenly angry suddenly hyper and such. :X
Keep my post for today short and nice.
As I really have nothing much to write about since it's just sectionals.
Yup. Keep up the GOOD WORK. And Sayonara!
GOLD! For Syf (:
huimin
P.S. I look like a idiot dragging my legs while walking thanks to my pathetic shoes. :X

Dunearn Military Band - Purgatorio - Dunearn Military Band

Hey ppl. Found this song purgatorio by dmb.

@ 18:42
Hello! Firstly, i would like to thank everyone who woke up early today for the morning combined sectional today... not forgetting that we should be grateful to the band teachers and Mr Yeo for making their effort to come early to school to hand us the key or to teach us.

Next, it's the speed that the music room was set up/ kept this morning...
everyone was like hurriedly setting up their instrument, then quickly help out with the chairs and stands, and at the same time trying to find out who is still not present...
if i am not wrong, it took us less than 10 mins to settle down...
ITS REALLY AMAZING! anything is possible if everyone stay together and help one another!
continue to keep up this attitude!
really hope that on thursday, everything could be set/ kept in less that 15mins... our target ok?

Lastly, here are some parts that Mr Yeo had gone through today... Take note of it, practice it and make it perfect ok?

Pecos:
1. Tempo Primo to Part L had been cut off
This means that we will play normally until the bar before Tempo Primo
then go straight Part L

At J:
1. Piccolo, Flute, Trumpet and Clarinet (Melody)
Your have to listen to one another. Trumpet have to play more. Clarinet is acting like a bridge linking the piccolo, flute and trumpet together. AND REMEMBER THAT THE LINE HAVE TO KEEP ON GOING, so don't breathe at parts Mr Yeo told you not to breathe. ( this will make the music beautiful, so don't breathe at those parts... die also cannot... i know it will be hard, but i believe as long as we try/practice, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!) Take note of the phrasing Mr Yeo had talk to you about and remember your dynamics... Think it through and practice it...
I believe your could do it! JIA YOU!

2. Euph, Horns, Trombone, Saxophones ( Counter melody at J)
Remember about your 4 bar phrasing and DYNAMICS

3. whole band
Bar 207 is the loudest part of the music
Remember to make lines in the music
It is still loud for the two bars before Tempo Primo, so don't soft down...

Overture 1:
1. 1st Trombone have to play more at the beginning

2. Whole Band
At Bar 4 and 5 the dynamics have to be exaggerated.
E.G. we could stay really soft after the "fp" then at the last count then we become very loud.. it will be the same for the next bar...

3. Part A
Clarinet have to push your air, clean notes and play together.
Flute, Piccolo and Oboe will then join in... changing the music into a brighter colour
your may want to think of happy things to help...
* REMEMBER TO HAVE AIR SUPPORT WHEN YOU PLAY*

4. Bass Drum can play less because Mr Yeo says that you become more accurate when you play less

5. Part B
1st Trombone and euph come out more so please work on that and you have to play like you are singing.

6. Part C
Clarinet have to play even lesser to get the effect for your crescendo

To end up, please go and recall what Mr Yeo had said last time like what thing to take note and the stuff he told us recently... Put them together, and the music would become better! because Mr Yeo said that there are alot of things that he had told us before, but we had forgotten...
Mr Yeo also told us to sing pecos and overture 1 everyday, please sing seriously because how you sing will be how you play. so if you don't sing with dynamics, phrasing and articulation, when you play you will be least likely to do that too..

THE BAND ROOM WILL BE OPEN AFTER SCHOOL TMR...
i know that there will be peer tutoring and tutorials after school, but i would really hope that your could come over to practice after your PT or tutorials...

13 more days left to SYF!!!!!

HELLLLLO.
Ytd band exchange at greedrige was not bad, I think everybody have done their best. Even if some of us have misbehave but we have improved alot from last few exchanges. We were not that noisy already, and we have listened to Mr yeo.
I have also learned alot of things from this exchange.
Btw, sorry that i said vulgarities out but I'll try to use less of it as i have alr get used to it. I'll slowly change, hope ur understand.
Bye!
Bowei.

@ 15:25
hello band.
i was ask to post on saturday's band exchange.
so here is my post.
Firstly, i think that this exchange was quite a good one.
prolly because of the co-operation of the band.
i think that the band has really taken in what Mr Yeo has said on friday.
therefore there was lesser noise level, but again people are still talking amongst themselves.
I think that the band can still improve on the tone.
like what( .. i dun noe his name.. the guy from NAFA.)
he said that our tone can be better, and to hear that the soloists have done well,
and the work we put in to phrase the music, i think that we have done a good job on the overall.
lastly, i would like to comment on some of the band members,
i think that sec 1s can be more initiated, as like there are people like the percussionist who need help.
therefore,i think that the sec 1s can come forward and lend them a helping hand.
as for the main band, i think that we must learn to be humble.
and try to listen to the majors.
although i have not been really committed to band,
i will try to work hard and come for every band practise in the future.
i really hope that after the seniors leave, the sec 3s will set a good example for our juniors.
after all, we're taking over the band soon.
so there. i hope that the band will be brought to greater heights.
and band, Mr Yeo said that
COMPLACENCY=DOWNFALL OF OUR BAND
so, i think that we should learn to be humble.
that's all i have..
sorry if i'm too naggy.
Gwen.

@ 13:15
Dear Band Members,

The names of the sec 1s have been updated. Thanks to Jasper.
I've linked everyone in the band that has a blog. Unless you state that you don't want to be linked, please do tag the blog. And we'll remove it. Thankyou. Oh ! I'll be checking the links once in a while so that it's updated. (:

Hello Band!
Im here to reflect on yesterday's exchange @ Greenridge.
I feel that the exchange yesterday was much more better than the other exchanges we had in terms of our discipline and playing. We weren't complacent, and we did focus during playing. But I believed we did not give our best. We did not put in effort when Mr Yeo is pointing out our weak/negative points, write down what he said. You see, Jasmine and Joyce's always writing down every single thing he mentioned. ( They're always beside me ) Yeah, practice makes perfect! Also, we should respect other bands when they are playing as well. Like, just keeping quiet.
& from today's exchange, I have learned that we, as a band, should be united in playing. Unity is really important, and this is what it needs for us to play together. I can see that the other bands really played together. (:
Lastly, our band really have alot of conflicts between one another. As long as we put the hatred behind us and move on, hopefully all this conflicts will be resolved. Forgive and forget? So, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to those I've offended before. Sorry people. (:
&&&&& SEE YOU GUYS TMR MORNING! :D
ClaudiaTan.

Saturday, 21 March 2009 @ 21:12
Hi band! (:
Gonna reflect about today's exchange, so is like this ;
I feel that when we were at greenridge, our behaviour was much more better, but there's still some people misbehaving themselves.. But anyway continue to keep up the good descipline!(: Then when playing the Overture No. 1 and Pecos Pueblo, I think we did quite well, but as what the guy (i forgot his name three) told us that the whole music 'power' like weak weak like that (sorry uh my eng. sucks) , so then we try to play more massive and heroic to sound better yah ! :D But don't forget some parts which needed to play soft must remember to play really soft ! (:
From this exchange, I learn that when we play must play together as one, instead of like individual playing . Must listen and blend to other members play ! Lastly, must must must LOOK at Mr Yeo !
I find that other band's playing is improving like Greenridge band, can see that they've been putting in a lot of effort. So if we do the same, put in more effort , practice every single part of the music in details without stopping , I am sure our efforts will not be wasted and we will not regret! We must not think that we've already put in many efforts already, becuase actually we really haven't reach to the best yet. So we must strive hard ! Get GOLD! WE CAN DO IT!!! ;DD
-TengJiao(:

@ 18:40
Hello band! :D
Im asked to do my reflection on this blog, so yeah, here it goes.
I feel that during today's exchange, we did quite well, just as what the guy told us. ( I forgot his name too.) Well at least, we are not complacent today, focused and looked at Mr Yeo, that's a good thing, but i do hope that band will always stay like this because it doesn't feel good to always see Mr Yeo feeling disappointed in us. I also hope that all of us will remember what are the points that are pointed out by the guy for both of the pieces, Overture No. 1 and Pecos Pueblo, so that we can always practise by ourselves and practise with our section. Just as what others use to say, Practice makes perfect.
As for what i had learnt from today's exchange, i learnt about togetherness, in other words, being united, after watching all the other bands performance. They really played as a band. Not only that, they were really very attentive and quiet when listening to other bands performance. Our band can also be like them, right?
I can see that band has been putting in alot of effort to improve and be more disciplined but still, there's always room for improvement. We cannot always think that we had put in alot of effort and its enough already, mainly because we are still not there yet. So, lets continue to work hard and strive towards our goal for the upcoming SYF, we have to get at least a GOLD. All the best!
-Regine.

@ 18:40
hello everybody. i'm here to reflect about today's band exchange at greenridge secondary school. firstly, i think that we are noisy during the tuning session in the classroom. jasper told the band to stop our conversation but we ignored his instructions and continued talking away. i can see he was very irritated. i think we should listen and follow the majors instruction. it is not good to be stubborn. imagine you tell someone to do something and he/she doesn't listen to you. you will definitely feel angry and irritated. secondly, i feel happy for the band because during the first half of the exchange session, we were not noisy but we started to get noisy during the second half of the exchange session. i think we should wait patiently for our turn to play and even if we already played, we should respect the other bands by keeping quiet while they are playing their pieces. let's improve our behavior and character and become better people. during the photo taking session, we were quite inconsiderate because we were dragging the chairs against the floor. as usual, in the brass bus, we were noisy and i think the driver is very irritated. next time we should keep our volume down and stop shouting and screaming in the bus.

i feel that we are working harder than before because we are more aware that syf is very near and we should feel worried for that. i really hope that we will improve alot each practice so that our improving rate will increase.

so now i want to tell everybody that we can achieve what we really want in this syf if we stay united. we can do it! do not be complacent as complacency will prevent us from working again. continue to work hard every practice. when mr yeo tell us something about our music, just write it down even if you think you can remember it because by writing what is said, you can remember easily. take every practice seriously so that every practice we will confirm be better than before. when you are free at home, take just some time to practise your syf pieces so that we can play more confidently during band practices. alright? i think that's all from me. we can do it! goodbye!

@ 17:56
hey band(:
Erm, yea, i'm here like the others, here to write my reflections.
Actually i think i'm still a junior, so i still might not have alot of rights
to say anything, even if a say, some might not even listen.
But i really feel that the band has lost the ' I WILL WORK HARD '
attitude that the OLD DMB has. I still remember when i
first stepped into DMB. The band was very dissaplined and all. But now,
i think that the attitude is gone. ITS NOT THE MAJORS FAULT.
They, themselves have been trying so hard to get the band together.
But none of us even bother to care about what they have said.
They tried very hard to get the band to be like it was before. But none
of their methods seems to be working. I think that some people have
been really working very hard. But what's the point when the others
are not doing the same thing? Like what MrYeo had said before,
' THE BAND IS AS GOOD AS ITS WEAKEST PLAYER '
It doesn't make any sense for the others to prepare so hard because
they really want a GOLD, when the others are like slacking.
Yea, and today, i think that the band is quite good :D
Many of us have listen to what MrYeo had said and practiced hard.
That's some good news! But, i think we still have a long way to go.
I was really delighted when the guy said that we were good(:
[ i forgot who he is. xD]
i would really like to thanks those people who made an effort to
come today(: I think all the SLs have been working very hard to
bond the section. WE ARE NOT DEAD TODAY. I THINK. hahaha.
DMB Jiayous. We can do it okay! Don't dissapoint our Alumis!
They have worked very hard! It's time for us to work hard too!
Lets work hard together for that GOLD! :D

open, feel it
hello!
sorry for th poor language nd hope u all understand.
Band are more focused today as everybody talk less. However, it can still be more quiet if one talk softer or reduce the word amount in the sentence. But the best is closed our mouth when not playing :D Today band prac was quite fruitful one due to much attentiveness. I can see everybody putting in effort and trying their best to work together. If we responds to mr yeo's words nd actions, together with our sectionals, we can progress faster. Look at mr yeo. I sometimes also cannot remember th notes, so i will somehow remember each phrase and when there is rest in between phrases, i will look at th upcoming notes, so i noe wad to play. Try to move the stand in mr yeo's direction and adjust the nice position, so we get to see both together. Listen to their comments and improve, no one is perfect. ;D lets be discipline!
There are some cca's historical pictures at th concourse and as for th band, u can see th achievements seniors have gain by their hardwork which continues the band. Its is our turn now to continue the path and make our seniors nd everybody proud of us. What we choose now will affect everything in our future so why not make it memorable and not regretting it. "We have confidence in our future", thats is written together with the band picture at the concourse.
Since we join band in th first place, why not workhard together. Each and everybody small efforts is connected in the music we play and forming a big achievement. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.".

Sometimes, band prac are boring and people get playful, not serious enough, thus mr yeo or seniors scold people, which caused unhappiness and skip band prac or even want quit band. We can take the "boring" time to look through the parts we are unsure of, do our fingerings and try to make it a meaningful time for us. If u give up so easily, remember why you hold for so long in the first place, why u join band."A winner is one who accepts his failures and mistakes, picks up the pieces, and continues striving to reach his goals." Comeon, gooooOOO!
"A human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind." , change it for a better one. Its either u wan or not. keep improving ourself and persevere to make a differences in our life.
alright, i dunno wad to post actually. anyway, trust nd believe in each other. we are dunearn military band!

ALL THE WAY
work together
smiles,
weeshan.

    Hello band! :D
I was told to post a essay on this blog.
I'm stuggling of what to say because my standard of
english is not good. But I hope you guys will understand
    what I meant / say.

I feel that today's band practice is better den the previous
practice. As, we are all focusing and paying attention to
what Mr.Yeo is saying. That's a good thing. Although I talk,
and others are talking alittle but I think it's ok.
And I see many people taking down notes of what Mr.Yeo
told us. I hope we can always pay attention like how we did
today. And everyone did a good job.

There's two things I learn today. I learn the meaning of
matching with flutes, oboes & vibes. Last time, I was so
noob. I dont know what's this, what's that. Matching means,
we must like try to connect to them as in who we are playing with.
Or else, it wont sound nice. I also learn that, we must really
listen. Because if you lost count, you have to listen to know
where you are & if you go ask the person beside you. End up,
both of you will also lost count. So we must really really listen.

I think that the band is okay. And if we really pay attention,
we are able to play better music. There was this time, when
my knee was injure and I wasn't able to fall in and do foot drills.
I sit at the shelter there, I look at the band doing drills.
The band look very nice, but just that got this something we lack
of. Which makes the band look weird. Not very weird. It's like,
you see an art piece or a picture, you can see something is not there
& it lokks funny/ weird. I think you guys will understand a bit of what
    I'm saying.

I also want to tell the band, we must be like that time, we in HK,
performing with NeoWinds. We worry about the concert &
we are putting in our effort to make a nice concert,
because we want to look nice, we dontwant to embarrass ourselves.
I can see that we really want to do well. We were worried &
I was feeling very stress-up. I like that time when we are all worry.
Not I like to see people worry lah. Is that, when we worry together
you know you not the only one worry & you have many people
    around you worrying too.

And that's was the first time I see tingwei alittle worried.
I really want him to worry again for his parts.
Because if he worry, he knows what to do & I believe he can do it.
And from a small action, we can see alot of things. Like today's
captain ball. Nicko's group they choose their own clique,
they think they will win with the friendship among them. In the end,
complency brought the whole team down.
Like Joyce's group, although we are winning, we became a little
complacent & the other group all trying to get the ball which
    shows a Never-Say-Die spirit. I like it!
Although, their group suddenly many people,
    suddenly short of 1-2 people.

Lastly, let's all work hard for SYF!

    Aubrey.

    Hey band!
My reflection for today's band practise was that i felt that we were able to apply what Mr Yeo asked us to do. :D We were more focus too. It would be good for us to always remember what Mr Yeo said and not just play it once through on that practise and put it aside. Like what Jasmine had said, we should go home and recall through the music. It is always good to strive for improvement as there is always someone out there who would be better then you.

My suggestion to motivate you to practise is to go to the internet on youtube and search for music played by your own instruments. That is what I did which did help to motivate me. (:

I think the band now is really trying their best to improve and not be so playful.
WE CAN DO IT PEOPLE! Even though there is only 2 weeks more to SYF, as long as we put our hearts and minds into practising, nothing is impossible. When we reap the good results, we would look back and think that all the hard work that we had put in in the past was all worthwhile.
Even though we are after Yuying Sec and before Victoria, we do not need to be afraid. As long as we did our part in practising and doing our best and most importantly to enjoy the music.

Tmr there will be an exchange with GSB. Even if they have improve tremendously, we should not feel discouraged but instead, set it as a target to improve too.

    JIAYOUS DMB! :DD

Er . i don't know what to say.. My reflections i think today's band practise was useful but if the band members can cut straight away after mr yeo cut it would be better because we tend to continue and continue until about 4 bars then stop which , in turn adds up to lots of time being waste.. One or two times is okay but if alot of time then keep continuing . If you can count, example 4 bars 15 seconds. We play for more then 20 times today . 20 times 15 becomes alot. Maybe if we are more oblivious to mr yeo, we can do stop together with him so that he will have more time to talk and correct us in our playing..

I think the band is getting quieter in terms of talketiveness but i think i am still talking and singing alot but i am trying. If i can keep quiet during band practises then it will be better. But i am not spouting nonsense . I also never scold vulgar. I talk to ruizhong about the music and sing sing with him.

Thats all but overall i think todays practise is productive because most of the people play the things mr yeo say during the play through. I think i also must praise ruizhong because i can see him trying his best to not breathe and i could see him trying very hard. i know he wants to breathe but he didn't. Thats all from me.

    Hiie Band...
I was asked to post a reflection of yesterday band xchange...so here goes..
Firstly, i think that compared to other bands @ TK sec xchange other bands was definitely far better than us..
lacking of many things showing in our music....TRUST, TOGETHERNESS and so on..
all of them are schools with famous reputation...
Crescent Girls',Hwa chong, Fuhua, CHIJ toa payoh & St. Margrets...
You may think its impossible to beat them but think positive...
SO WHAT! You are not seeing wrongly...SO WHAT if we are only a neighbourhood school!
    Can't we do better?
YES WE CAN! BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT...SHOW THAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVE!
    GOLD...or even better..GOLD WITH HONOUR!
we are having many problems in band now
but lets put aside all our conflicts, hatred, pessimistic thinking away...
work our hardest for our last 2 weeks before SYF...Get everything as perfect as possible...
LET US TOGETHER AS ONE MOVE FORWARD AND SHINE...
LET US GET OUR OVERSEAS REWARD FROM MR WONG TO JAPAN...
DUN LET THE OTHERS BEAT US....
Yes...i may not be a good flute player but still i worked hard to get the music as right as possible..
SO... just show your effort kays.....WE R ALL IN THIS TOGETHER :D
Dun let Mr Yeo be disappointed in us...
Take away our ARROGANT & COMPLACENT attitude

    Hey Band(:
I was asked to write my reflection-cum-scrunity about today's exchange.
Well, the other bands were incredible, and in my opinion,
we were kind of far-fetched from them.
Perhaps it's like what mr yeo said,
our band lack unity+resilience, not synergic at all.
I feel that our conduct had improved from last exchanges( nan chiau; Ngee ann),
we were less noisy and less oblivious to the surrounding.
Although at times some of us were still fooling around,
at least we did took a step to improve.
Also, the bonding time with other schools make me realised that the band can improve alot further(:
I'm aware that the possibility of getting a gold, not to mention GWH, is little,
BUT, if we work hard, there will be no regrets right(it's less than a month away yo)?^.^
    jy!
The band is more often than not criticised by our school mates, from what i've heard,
it's because band is monstrously noisy and spent alot of the school's funds?
However, should we be affected by their opinions? NO!
We were able to travel overseas, Genting in 07 & HK in 08,
thus we should not dissapoint the faith the school has in place for us, not to forget, ourselves.
Lastly, do you know idea how i remember my running notes?
It sounds dumb, but it works alright.
    When you are bathing;relieving yourself,
just run through your running notes with your fingers continously until you get it right.
I do it alright, i would sing the tune (despite being unable to sing:/) while doing the fingerings plentiful times till it stucks in my head like superglue(:
Whenever i play my oboe at home, my parents would be like super irritated,
yup, they lack appreciation for music :S
So..., i lock my room door each time i play my oboe(It's useless,my parents would should shout: ''STOP,you are disturbing the neighbours and i'm having a headache'' :/

Anyway, exchange with greenridge this sat,
    COMPLACENCY=FAILURE+DISSAPOINTMENT.
Let's not let Mr Yeo to use the word ''dead''on us ok.
    JY alright?^.^

    yours,
    Grace Low

    Gifts for the exchange.
    Hi band,
I would like to apologize to the secondary three who did up all the gifts for the exchange today. So sorry that I asked you guys to do up gifts for Tanjong Katong when Crescent Girls was the host band. I didn’t know about it too, so yeah.

I'm rather please and happy when almost all the sections had did up what they had to do as required, though flute section didn't do it. Especially Saxophone Section, whom had their card laminated. it’s really very nice of you guys to do that. Trumpet section, Clarinet section and the Double Reeds too, did up a beautiful card.

This coming Saturday we’ll be having an exchange with Green Ridge Secondary, so you have to do up something again as well. However, materials will be provided for you this time. All of you will be given some cardboard to decorate, hope you will do a nice job like this time. And hope all the sections will do it, and don’t disappoint me and Jueying. As long as we can see you putting in effort to do it, we're satisfied.

And for the Secondary threes again, Jueying and I have decided to make all the Secondary threes to turn their turns to post on the band's blog. Objectives of it is to let you guys gain experience writting to the band, tell the band what you've learnt, learning to motivate one another and let us know how you feel about band now. Also, do chip in ideas of what you think DMB could do to improve ourselves in order to achieve at least a gold. Remember, our aim is always Gold with Honours. To those who are writting, if you had received any comments by the other bands during the sharing-time today, and they had told you guys any good advices, do post it out too, share with the entire band members. And you may include in your entries how you think of this particular person or the section, which part they have to work extra harder on, but of course, reminders: please do not write anything too offensive, because this blog is world-wide readable. Encourage the person, instead of insulting him/her and pull her morale down. Ok?

As for the rest of the members, we hope you could read what the secondary threes had wrote and think through what they had said. Remember they will be your future leaders in two-three weeks' time.

    Jiali.

I was asked to drop by and leave my reflections here. (FIRST!!! ><)
Well, i think today we did not really do our best.
    and my solo sucks.
We are not following Mr. Yeo AGAIN.
At first i thought that our band was quite okay today.
Cause we sat with our sections and such.
But once after break, some changed their place.
    I was kind of disappointed.
I heard from some people in our band that, there are parts where some of their seniors do not have enough air to continue, they will just skip one note or just break the tie.
And it was so obvious that juniors could tell.
Footdrills are there to help us to improve our stamina, it make our breath longer.
But why do we have not enough breath to continue?
This meant that we aren't serious in our drills.

Have you ever look around the musicroom, and take a look at the posters?
There is one like this ,"Don't Quit. Something miracle might happen."
The are times where i wanted to quit band. yea, times.
But there are times where miracles happen, such as the bond we had overseas, camps..
It made me stayed in band.
    This also applies to music.
If we quit improving our music, miracles will not happen.
The chances of getting a gold is LOW.
Let us just imagine, all of us are working freaking hard, even recess we go to band.
Of course the chances of getting gold is like more than now.
I don't really meant it, but at least bring home your instrument sometimes.
I do bring home every saturday recently.

We should be grateful that we could go overseas.
And we all should show to the school that it's because we worked real hard, going overseas is a reward for all of us.
You see, guzheng, malay dance.. etc.. Do they go overseas?
And most of them are jealous of us.
But we must show them that this is what hard work pays off. (is this sentence right???)
If our SYF this year, we didn't do well, I guess the trip to japan would be so pointless.
What for going to japan when you couldn't improve ur music after thousands of reminders?
My sister is jealous that we could go overseas almost every year.
Their band got gold and silver for 2006 & 2008 (if not wrong.)
Yet they had never went overseas.
Lets us buck up, and prove to them that we worth it.

I suggest that, when you bring home your instrument,
bring it to the playground and play to the kids. (This what my neighbour had done.)
Well, at least it improves your confidence in playing infront of people.
Although i had not tried it yet. Because i think the kids would fall asleep listening to a bass clarinet plays. ^^
But i think this would be useful for trumpets, trombones & HORNS!
As for my method, I play at the balcony with the door closed, at night around 9...
I think i woke alot people up, but i could tell people are listening to my music sometimes ^^
Cause some looked up when they were passing by my block haha.
And it was very fun to do it. (:
But i think don't do it around 9. Around 7 will be best.
Because everyone came back from work, tiring. ><
They will feel so happy to listen to band musics.

Lets all buck up together and improve within 18days!
Well, it will be better if we improves ASAP. ^^
Don't let your seniors and alumni disappointed!
Bring back Dunearn our glory days!! (:
oops, i'm sorry that my post is long, and some english mistake...(I failed my english.)
Hope you guys would heed "part" of my advices.
And i will heed yours. (:
Oh ya, Stop making the majors angry. Or you, me and ALL OF US will suffer (:
And the majors are already having a bad time. So yea, listen to them more .
And listen to Mr. Yeo. He, too, is having a hard time.
If he everytime scold us, he will lost his voice again.
So, haha, be more guai leh (:

Erm, Adding on.. i think we should bring up our instruments at same time..
    and make some patterns (:
For bonding the band, i had some ideas. But i think if i continue to post, everyone will kill me. It's too long !!! hahaha.
Oh and i think Nicholas is making an effort to come band even though he is late. Quite a good thing. Cause if it was me in the past, i would not go band if i was late. But it will be good if he wouldn't be late on important days ^^

    Signing off,
    Xiaohui. (:
19032009 muahaha. 1st time leave footprints in DMB blog, must remember ^^

    @ 18:04
Hey there people. Okay I don’t know if writing here talking to your is gonna work, but at least I tried. I just want to say continue to work hard don’t stop.
Push yourself to your limits. Always do your best in everything and don’t give up. You can do it, and WE can do it together. In order to enjoy have fun get what you want, we must now work hard.
WE CAN DO IT, believe in yourself. Actions actions actions! Show it out! Don’t disappoint anyone. Even though we are left with only 2 weeks more, but anything is possible. At least you put in the effort and hard work and don’t regret.
    CMON DMB!!! :D

    @ 17:17
Hi band, I hope what happened after the exchange has woken everyone up. There's 18 days left to SYF. Yes it is near, but there's still time to change, still time to give it your all in your mindset, discipline, attitude and of course, your music. What the band wins will depend on how much effort each and every member of the band puts in. Yes it is tiring, yes it is time consuming, but think about it, if we just start to work very very hard, give all your energy, put your mind on the task, no matter what medal we win in the end, it will be a memorable experience for everyone. What kind of memory you want to keep for the rest of your life is up to you. If you don't give it your all, even if you win a gold medal, will it mean anything to you? Think about it. Put away your complacent attitude, your ego and your grudges with one another. This band is only great if everyone works together as a team. Yes, Mr Yeo says that the band has talented individuals, but this band does not revolve around an individual, it revolves around every single member of the band. Perseverance is very important now, if you have a problem with some part of the music, work on it. Work on it until you get it right consistently. If people give you advice that is practical, please work on it. Don't throw people's useful words down the drain, that will just show how arrogant and complacent you are. We are not there yet, but there's time to work towards it. Remember that nothing is impossible. Seriously, it just takes effort and discipline. Ok some comments from the various conductors on our performance during the exchange: Opening for Overture is good, but we gradually lost life in the music. Pecos was well played, but seriously lacked direction and flow. Ok these are the two comments that Mr Yeo has told me about. For overall we have to improve on dynamics, section leaders, please start to get your section to exaggerate the dynamics. To improve flow and direction, I suggest that we take breaths at appropiate places and also dynamic change is also important. So section leaders, please work these out as well as any other problems that your section may have with the music. Band I really hope that you will do these from your heart, not because I tell you to. If you want to win a gold medal, you really have to concentrate all your focus and your energy for the next 18 days on your music. For tomorrow sec 1s need not come, seniors please fall in at 7:30am in black band tee and there will be a captain's ball game tomorrow at 12noon so please do join us and have some fun! Have a good rest tonight and see you tomorrow! :]

COME ON! WE CAN KEEP IT ALIVE!
    HELLO!
i hope everyone had spent sometime thinking about what had happened yesterday...
ITS A BRAND NEW DAY TODAY! SO ITS A GOOD CHANCE FOR A CHANGE!

Here's something i found on the net and hope that it will encourage you to strive for the better :

Figure it out for yourself, my lad.
You’ve got all that the greatest of men have had,
Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes,
And a brain to use if you would be wise.
With this equipment they all began,
So start for the top and say, "I Can ."

Look them over, the wise and the great,
They take their food from a common plate,
And similar knives and forks they use,
With similar laces they tie their shoes.
The world consider them brave and smart,
But you’ve got all they had when they made their start.

You can triumph and come to skill,
You can be great if you only will.
You’re well equipped for the fight you choose,
You have arms and legs and a brain to use.
And the man who has risen great deeds to do,
Began his life with no more than you.

You are the handicap you must face,
You are the one who must choose your place,
You must say where you want to go,
How much you will study the truth to know.
God has equipped you for life, but He
Lets you decide what you want to be.

Courage must come from the soul within,
The man must furnish the will to win.
So figure it out for yourself, my lad,
You were born with all the great have had,
With your equipment they all began.
Get hold of yourself, and say: "I Can ."

    19 MORE DAYS TO SYF
hang in there... don't give up! believe in yourself, trust your members to practice! we will be there!

    Hang In There

Whatever it is you do in life,
Try to remember that nothing is too big to achieve
And nothing is too small to ignore,
Hang on in there, even if it's with the last thread,
    It is well.

You may be on life's path
Not having an idea how and when you'll get there,
The most important thing is that you have a sense of direction,
All you have to do is to take each step one at a time,
    And you'll get there.

The idea behind life is about meeting people,
The beauty of life is loving people,
The essence of life is about making impacts,
The joy of life is leaving footprints in the sands of time.

    On your journey through life,
    Absorb everything you hear,
But choose what you want to believe...

so.. remember! YOU CAN AND YOU WILL STRIVE FOR THE BETTER, IF YOU HAVE THE WILL! HANG IN THERE! WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY! DON'T GIVE UP!

NEXT BAND PRACTICE FOR SEC1, 2,3,4,5 will be tmr, thursday...
fall in at 7.30am in white band tee and school skirts or pants...

i trust you to change and strive for the better... see you all tmr!

    Hey DMB!!
Just an update for everyone about the exchange this saturday.
The school we're going to is Nan Chiau High School
It's in Sengkang for your info
The following schools are in the afternoon session (there's morning and afternoon session):
    • Nan Chiau High School
    • Yuying Secondary School
    • Pasir Ris Secondary School
    • Victoria Secondary School
    • Dunearn Secondary School
    • Kranji Secondary School
    • Hua Yi Secondary School
    • Zhonghua Secondary School
Alright so I guess we will be seeing some familiar faces. Associate professor Ho Hwee Long will be there to comment on each band's performance as well. He will be something like a judge there. PLEASE PLEASE FOCUS ON THE MUSIC!!! We don't want to repeat what happened at Ngee Ann. Look at Mr Yeo, watch him becuase you guys should have memorized your scores by now. When it's not our turn to play, please at least show respect to other bands by keeping quiet. If you have positive comments, voice it out only after the exchange. If your comments are negative, pls keep them to yourselves. I know it can be boring and tiring to watch 7 other bands play their pieces, but there's always something to learn from each band. Here are the instructions for saturday:

Attire: Black band tee with school pants or skirt (no PE shorts)
    Fall-in time: 10:30am (don't be late)
We will give everyone a lunch break but please come back at the time we ask you to, no later. The bus will leave at 12pm.
    Cya all on saturday! :]
